media power and what's happening in Kenya

is this YouTube explosive interview about the exposure of a Thought Community, about RAG, about power, or about Who Are We? ... see Bill O'Reilly on FOX news about MSNBC News. Is O'Reilly talking about media manipulation... or is O'Reilly manipulating the media?

info on Kenya as we discussed in eve session last night - some actual analysis from HIllary Clinton and Barack Obama http://www.cfr.org/publication/16204/ <-- from the council on foreign relations, Foreign Policy Brain Trusts: Clinton Advisers here is an audio cast http://www.cfr.org/publication/15147/gavin.html
Violence started after Dec 2007 election of the incumbant. SUMMARY OF PODCAST: set back to new democracy in Kenya...both candidates (incumbent Kibaki and Odinga) linked to "old guard"...incumbent won - Odinga was the challenger and he lost. violence linked to political operatives: tribal feuds. Political leaders are tribal leaders. voter fraud seems clearly to be on the side of Odinga's opponent (the incumbent) because Odinga had been leading in all the polls this violence troubling for the whole region because it is connected to the old guard. Kenya was to lead the region to new economic growth: this violence not a good signal for investors US interests: Kenya is important in counter-terrorism efforts. need partnership. Kenya as anchor Somalia, Sudan, etc. Stability in Kenya very important to USfrom this article
President is super-powerful in Kenya: basically controls everything - a left-over from colonial days. Because of this winner-take-all political institutional setup, some feel that the re-organization of political institutions far outweighs the tribalism as the source of the problems in Kenya, hence in the region. because it's winner-take-all (i.e, I'm the President, so I appoint everyone and if I don't like some branch of governement, e.g., the Parliament, I simply dissolve it) - because of this, tribal conflict ALWAYS follows political elections. It is NOT set up to resolve tribal conflict by "knitting' the two sides together as one. Democracy and economy are totally linked: investors will not go if it is in violent chaos.
Since December and the chaos that followed, Odinga has now been installed as the Prime Minister by the PResident.
here's an article on <-- "what should Bush do now?"
What distinctions are there between Clinton and Obama on Kenya?

The Final One....

For my final paper, I will examine the financial forces behind the political campaign and how they have a great influence on political decision making and policy. If it becomes difficult to obtain information on this topic, then, I will focus on Obama's and Clinton's views on immigration.

Builders of Thought Communities

The foundation of the thought community we live in is created by a combination of the the ideas we have been taught since birth. It began to take form with the very first things we learned before going off to school, and was reinforced by all the teachers we came in contact with thereafter: at school, at church, and while paying close attention to what the media says about who we are and are not. Some teachers take the form of consequences we face after a good or bad life decision. This foundation is solidified by being in relationship with those who have learned similar lessons, and who still have similar lessons to learn.
The brick and morter and walls of our thought communities are contructed carefully and over time, as we sort through what we have been taught, and choose to become a part of an already existing community or dare to begin building a new one.

Archibald MacLeish, 1892-1982, American Poet

Poem for Memorial Day
The young dead soldiers do not speak.
Nevertheless, they are heard in the still houses: who has not heard them?
They have a silence that speaks for them at night and when the clock counts.
They say: We were young. We have died. Remember us.
They say: We have done what we could but until it is finished it is not done.
They say: We have given our lives but until it is finished no one can know what our lives gave.
They say: Our deaths are not ours: they are yours, they will mean what you make them.
They say: Whether our lives and our deaths were for peace and a new hope or for nothing we cannot say, it is you who must say this.
We leave you our deaths. Give them their meaning.
We were young, they say. We have died; remember us.

Who Am I According to the 3 Candidates

Does each political campaign "answer" differently to the question "who am I?" Do the candidates answer that question differently from the way their supporters answer that question? Do you sense any variation in our 4 blogs of the people who support one or the other candidate? Does the media, in its presentation of these candidates, also have a reply to the question "Who Am I?"

A "content analysis" of the sites, blogs and musing on these questions could form the basis of a final paper. See comment, too.

Who Cares?!!!

I have been sitting in class all quarter listening to everyone talk about the democratic campaign and president Bush....sorry to say but I am one of those who is not concern about politics. Who cares about Bush and about our next president?!!! They are all Liars...The people know this and yet they continue to participate in this circus act...Presidents will never be concern with the real issues that affect the working class...they are too busy serving those that donated money towards their campaign...so instead of wasting our energy blogging about these clowns, we should blog about the real issues that are currently affecting our communities and give birth to ideas that will lead to social change and action.....Now I feel better knowing that I finally got this out of my chest...Thanks for reading....=)
